The conference objective is to provide practical medical, investigative, and mental health information about child abuse/neglect to physicians, other health care providers and investigators, so they may improve their abilities to recognize child abuse injuries and symptoms of abusive relationships. The highlights of this conference will be:  Investigative Strategies, Interrogation Techniques, Dating Violence, Broken Bones & Children, What's Abuse & What's Not?, Working with and Assessing the Non-Abusive Parent, Techniques for Working with Traumatized Children, Assessing and Working with Children with sexual behavior problems.

Who Should Attend:

Pediatricians, Emergency, Critical Care Medicine, Family Practice physicians, nurses, social workers, counselors, mental health practitioners, Child Protective Services, Law Enforcement, law enforcement officers and educators.

Continuing Education

Physicians
The Grand Rapids Medical Education and Research Center is accredited by the Michigan State Medical Society Committee on CME Accreditation to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The Grand Rapids Medical Education and Research Center designates this educational activity for a maximum of 6.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Registered nurses
Spectrum Health is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Wisconsin Nurses Association Continuing Education Approval Program Committee, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.  

This activity will provide 6.6 contact hours. Contact hour certificates will be provided only for those individuals who attend the entire presentation, and complete and return an evaluation form.  Individuals leaving early will not receive a certificate.

The nurse can utilize information related to a variety of injuries to children that may or may not be child abuse related, by then being able to recognize the flags for possible abuse.  After this conference, care providers will be more aware of the impact of child abuse and child abuse as a possible diagnosis and the resources available to sort this out. Having an understanding of mandated reporting requirements will aid the nurse and other professionals in providing the best possible care to these children and contribute to their return to a safer environment.

Social Workers
The Helen DeVos Children's Hospital and the Children's Assessment Center are pleased to announce that 6.5 Social Work CEC's. 

Law Enforcement MCOLES are also being offered.

Michigan Department of Education will offer .6 CEU credits for attending the full conference.  Individuals will need to sign in and out.

OBJECTIVES FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION BREAKOUTS

Keynote Session
1. Describe the complexities of a child victim in an abuse setting and identify key preventable failures in the child/criminal justice system
2. Explain insights into the mind of a sociopath and criminal behavior and discuss strategies for protecting children, improving the system and thus bettering the world for children

Morning Breakout B Session
1. Describe the scope and types of teen dating
2. Identify problems with current data and discuss elements of a good prevention program

Afternoon Breakout B Sessions
1. Describe bone anatomy and bio mechanics, recognize different fracture types and common causal mechanisms, identify those that correlate to abusive injury, understand how radiological studies aid in diagnosis and the need to consider medical causes of fragile bones.
2. Describe presentations that can be confused for abuse and discuss how to know when to be concerned that it is abuse.
